Book Club: Fatal Justice and a Visit with, um, Me...

Good morning and thanks for coming to our book club meeting about Fatal Justice, the second in the Fatal Series! I've been really delighted by the response to the second book. Readers seem to be connecting to Sam and Nick and their friends, colleagues and families. I'm having so much fun writing them, so thanks for coming along on their wild ride! Just like we do every week, here's a bit about the book:

She looked into the dead face of the man she'd dined with the night before

Standing over the body of a Supreme Court nominee, Lieutenant Sam Holland is hip-deep in another high-profile murder case. The fact that she was one of the last people to see Julian Sinclair alive just complicates things even more. On the plus side, her relationship with Senator Nick Cappuano is heating up—but it's also attracting a lot of unwanted media attention and blinding flash bulbs.

The pressure is on for Sam to find Sinclair's killer, but a new lead in her father's unsolved shooting puts her in unexpected danger. When long-buried secrets threaten to derail her relationship with Nick, Sam realizes that while justice can be blind, mixing romance with politics has the potential to be fatal...

Today I'll be giving away copies of Fatal Affair and Fatal Justice! To be entered into the drawing, PLEASE help me find a last name for Nick's friend Dr. Harry, who has been so popular with Fatal Justice readers that I am bumping him up to series regular status. Which means he needs a last name! (Disclaimer: I'm not promising to choose one of today's suggested names, but I will give the books away no matter what!)

Because it's terribly embarrassing to be featuring my own book, I turned the blog over to the Whip-Cracking Book Club Wenches and here is what they had to say about Fatal Justice (and, in some cases, Fatal Affair, too!):

From Anne:
As far as FATAL JUSTICE, I loved the realistic style and personal details. It's as if I'm right in the middle of each conversation. I love the funny and witty remarks that come out of your characters mouths. I love that not everyone is perfect; that everyone has worries and concerns, problems to overcome. I love the development of the romantic relationship between Nick and Sam and I can't wait for the next book in the series. I also can't wait to attend the wedding!!

One of my favorite scenes is when Sam is changing into the suit for Nick's swearing-in. She's not sure it's just right for such a solemn and serious occasion, one that will certainly be attended by high-ranking political figures. She is worried that she's exposing too much of her generous cleavage and will embarrass Nick. Her sister makes the statement that "Nick is such a flaming liberal so Sam's suit and cleavage should not be a problem." Of course, Nick steps up at the right moment and assures everyone that Sam is just perfect and he is proud she's standing next to him.

I love all the moments between Nick and Sam -- he's stolen my heart. I love how he just doesn't care who sees his displays of affection and love for Sam.

Another of my favorite parts of this series is the relationship Sam has with her father. There's just so much care, respect and admiration going both ways between father and daughter. I like how Skip interacts with Nick, as well. I'm a sucker for daddy's girls!!

From Hope:

Fatal Affair:
** I really loved when she was messing with his desk (really cracked me up)
** When she had to cuff him to the bed so he would stay out of the investigation, he said..."You owe me twenty-six minutes in handcuffs, and I fully intend to collect." (that is one of my favorite quotes)

Fatal Justice:
** Freddie's first time was HOT HOT HOT, I honestly expected him to chicken out
** The Congress for Dummies book that she was caught reading made me chuckle, then how Sam twisted the words of Filibuster did me in, my chuckle turned into the giggles (I know, soooo 8th grade lol)
** The "villain" Stahl was someone you could easily hate, and you wished the worst from him even in the first book.
** Nick asking Terry to join his team and his conditions, made me tear up

It was really hard for me to only pick a few scenes. These are some of my favorite of all time books. The story is sweet between Nick and Sam, but there is so much meat to the investigations that the WHO-DON-IT is also very entertaining. The strength and vulnerability of both lead characters is humbling and believable. I truly love this series.

From Ronlyn:
The real thread of the Fatal series is how Sam & Nick are with each other. They are each other's everything: they understand each other on a level that is enviable. They make us believe they can do anything and overcome whatever obstical is thrown in their path, yet at the same time they are so personable with one another. Her teasing him about his obsessive need for everything to be in it's place; him teasing her with his "inappropriate" displays of PDA. Those are the moments that are most endearing and the moments that make the Fatal series as a whole, not just Fatal Justice, so wonderful.

From Mary G:
I loved Fatal Justice. It was my first experience reading a series with the same hero and heroine. You kept your great writing style AND kept it fresh. I loved watching Nick & Sam's relationship evolve and grow - still hot & romantic. Loved the secondary characters too - I adored Freddy, Gonzo & Harry. It was sexy hot, terrific suspenseful plot & you added some humor too. What more do we need?

From Aly (Favorite scenes/lines):

Nick knew he should comfort Sam but couldn’t seem to move his arms. All at once, fear became anger. “I can’t.” He shook her off.

“What?” she asked, startled.

“I can’t be here. I’m sorry.” Spinning around, he started back down the long corridor to the elevator.

She followed him. “Where’re you going?”

He walked faster, needing to get out of there. Immediately. “I don’t know. Home. I can’t do this, Sam. I thought I could, but I can’t.”

“What can’t you do?” She grabbed his arm, forcing him to look at her. “What’re you saying?”

“I thought it was you.” His heart breaking, he studied her one-in-a-million face. “I thought you’d been shot.”

“But I wasn’t, Nick.” She rested her hands on his chest, beseeching him with her eyes. “I’m right here. I’m fine.”

“This time.”

“You’re upset about Julian. Let’s talk about this later. When I get home.”

He shook his head. “I can’t spend my whole life waiting for it to be you. I’m sorry, Sam.”

AND

He reached for her, brought her in close to him, and kissed her forehead. “I don’t know. The only thing I know for sure is that I love you. I found out today just how much.”

AND

Sam looked closer and saw that Elin had driven him. “Still seeing the phone-shutter-offer, huh?”

AND

“He was a hell of a guy that Leviticus, wasn’t he Detective Cruz?” Sam said.

“In our time, he’d be considered a bigot,” Freddie said with a pointed look at Diandra.

“I’m not a bigot, Detective. My beliefs are grounded in scripture.”

“Your friend, Leviticus also recommends stoning for married couples who engage in intercourse during the woman’s period,” Freddie said. “I sure hope you’ve never done that.”

“It’s not the same thing,” Diandra snapped. “A woman’s period is a natural event.”

“How do you reconcile the unnatural ‘abomination’ with the commandment to love thy neighbor?” Freddie asked. “And Jesus himself said, ‘If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.’”

Diandra glared at him.

From Kara:
Ok, so seriously. There is too much GOOD stuff in this book. I just reread my highlights. It was like rereading the book. LOL You know I love Sam. So some of my favorite lines are about her. Take these for instance:

Nick - "The twists and turns of your mind are a constant source of fascination to me."

Nick - "God, you're such a pain in the ass."
Sam - "Thank you."
Nick - ..."You're the only woman I know who would take that as a compliment."

Sam ' "Christ. All these entanglements. When did I get so entangled?"

Sam - "I wouldn't want you to think I'm easy."
'Hooting with laughter, he said, "No worries there, babe."

Then of course, there's the whole messing with his desk thing.

LOVE her. Truly one of my all time favorite heroines ever. But, then I think you've heard that before. (Oh, and Nick's not half bad himself.)

From Crystal:
What I love the absolute most about Sam is her total devotion to her father. Being a daddy's girl myself I think she is the ideal daughter. Her love for her father is amazing. I really like how you have made her into a genuine woman. She is self-conscious and uncertain about all the normal women things. Yet she is strong, self assured, and very independent.

What I love about Nick... His single mindedness when it comes to his one and only woman. He loves Sam with such passion and devotion. I like that he didn't have the best childhood, but he has overcome it all. He is truly a good guy in POLITICS! lol

So far my favorite line in Fatal Justice is... After Sam tells Nick about something upsetting from her past... Nick says "And I love you even more than I did earlier, if that is possible." That is true love!

Thanks y'all. You know how badly I wanted to write a series featuring the same H/H in every book. I wasn't sure how it would be received by readers. Reading your thoughts and favorite things makes me smile from ear to ear. Looking forward to today's meeting!

Yeah! The day has come to talk about FJ and I may actually be around most of the day!! :)

I really fell in love with Sam & Nick - and honestly the rest of the crew - in FA. The characters came off the page for me and I wanted to be a part of their lives! So of course I was so excited for the next book to come out!

The relationship that restarted for Sam & Nick in FA grew so well in FJ. They aren't perfect, still have their ups & downs - as one of my favorite quotes shows - but their love has certainly deepened. Now that doesn't mean their sarcasm with each other has lessened :) LOL!

But it isn't just S&N that have "grown" since FA. Freddie, Skip, Gonzo, Christina and really all the secondary characters have started blossoming into such fabulous people that I want know just as much about them as I do S&N.

However, my new absolute favorite - after Nick - has to be Dr. Harry! I LOVE HARRY! The man just cracks me up and his wit is the perfect match for dealing with Sam and her health! I so want to see more of Harry ;) And if he ends up with a girlfriend named Aly, I don't think I would mind at all!

Marie, I am so thrilled that you got your way about writing a series with the same H/H in it. It doesn't always work well but you have written such fabulous characters and riveting storylines that not only does it work but you have most of us clamoring for more!

Dru said...

I love this series. I read both books in 2-3 days savouring every moment.

My favorite scene in FJ is when Sam was having her examination by Harry and thinking of all the things she's going to do to Nick.

I also loved when Nick was pissed at her after he ran all the way to the hospital and she was okay.

And then the next scene where she was kidnapped and called Nick to tell him she what was happening.

Harry is the best.

I love all the supporting cast and like how they are all intermingling (Christina & Gonzo).

Freddie's first time, what a great scene.

Like everyone, I love her relationship with her father.

Hey Aly,
Thanks so much for starting us off with a bang! Thanks to all of you for "having me" today! I'm very excited to talk about the Fatal books and to hear what you all think of book 2. It's such a thrill to get it out there to readers! Thanks for all your support, Aly!

Dru,
I'm so glad you enjoyed the first two books! Yay! Love hearing that. And I love how Harry has become the star of Fatal Justice! I had such fun writing that scene with him and Sam. I laughed so hard as she plotted all the ways she was going to kill Nick. I think the rusty steak knife was my favorite. :-) She is SUCH a trip to write so it is fun to pair her with characters who can more than hold their own with her--like Nick and Harry! More of Harry coming in Fatal Consequences and Fatal Destiny!

Mary G said...

Marie ,congrats on a great doubleheader. Can't wait for more. Kara's right, so many good parts to quote.

Mary G said...

LOL visit with Dr. Harry!

Hope said...

I LOVED this series and can't wait for more. They are addictive and it is easy to get sucked in to Sam/Nick land. One of my all time favorite quotes, that I didn't give to Marie earlier is...

"While your driving clearly leaves something to be desired, they weren't just after you." Smirking, he filled her in on what he'd heard about the gang initiation. "I was worth triple extra points. You were just regular points."

There are just so many good scenes to list, I would be copying the whole darn book. Can't wait for the next book in July.

krisgils33 said...

Marie,
I'm sorry I didn't put anything together for your blog, but the other gals captured everything so beautifully, there's no way I could have added anything. I love all the scenes/lines that were shared and I also love the part about the rusty steak knife and that Nick was worth "triple extra points".

I love Sam and Nick so much. I love how they're growing and maturing in their relationship and I love how you convey that they're flawed individuals in a believable way that is not over the top. The banter is great and the story itself is such a fun ride. The secondary characters are viable characters and not simply window dressing. I loved Harry and can't wait to see him more. I have no suggestions on a last name.

The only problem I have right now is that I have to wait for more! I really hate that. Patience is not my forte (and this is why I try to wait until a series is completed and read them all at once!).

BTW, I still want to be a bridesmaid!! (or I'll take best man!!!!)

Alison said...

Love this series! I'm completely addicted and can't wait to find what happens next with Sam, Nick and the rest of the crew.

I'm loving Freddie...his first time and his talk w/ Nick at the hospital!

Dr. Harry is the best! He dealt w/ Sam perfectly! I was so happy to find out her stomach issues werent anything too serious.

I'm so glad you're writing a series with the same H/H...I love seeing how they are growing as a couple and dealing with whatever comes their way.

Hope said...

Question: I love the triplets (and not just because one of them has my name or wears kick ass shoes, ok maybe that is the reason) Do you plan to give them any bigger parts?

Marie Force said...

Hi Mary,
So glad you love Dr. Harry! I wasn't expecting him to become the star of Fatal Justice, but I am thrilled that you all love him so much. He will be showing up again and at some point I'll give him a major story!

Hi Hope,
I love the way Sam and Nick razz each other. He was so funny telling her about the triple extra points! I'm not sure where that stuff comes from. I think at times Sam and Nick are channeling through me. They are SO fun to write! Thanks for reading and loving them so much!

Hi Kris,
Sorry you have to wait for more, but July 18 will be here before we know it and then the big wedding novella, Fatal Destiny, a freebie coming in September (if I ever get it written that is...) I know what you mean about wanting to read a series all at once, but I am hoping this one will go on for a while, so that would be sad to have you waiting for the last one! :-) We can't have that!

Crystal (cmac) said...

Hey Marie,
Thanks to you I am very zombie like today! I couldn't put Fatal Justice down last night and stayed up until 1:00 this morning finishing it.
It was GREAT! You are very talented to be able to continue their story in a series and keep it so interesting. I love Sams sassy, I can do it all attitude. She gives Nick a run for his money that is for sure.
I love that Nick is so dedicated to their relationship. I just simply love this couple! The secondary couples are great too! I love that Cruz has such deep faith and all the issues that come with it! He cracks me up after his conversation in the hospital room with Nick!
Soo... a last name for Dr. Harry... Huh lets see...Johnson! lol Kidding.... uhhh maybe Montgomery?

Marie Force said...

Hi Alison,
I'm so glad you love the series! Thank you so much for reading. Freddie is SO fun to write. There is so much more of him coming in Fatal Consequences and I have a big story planned for him in Fatal Flaw that I ran by Aly this morning and she LOVED it! Looking forward to writing that. I also have a blockbuster story planned for Skip that I am looking forward to writing. AND, in FC, Detectives Gonzales and Jeannie McBride are front and center. All of their stories will continue in future books.

Hope,
I do plan to delve further into the triplets. Faith has a storyline in Fatal Destiny that is turning out to be quite interesting (at least to me) and I'm enjoying delving into her a little more. The story also involves her sister Hope (what a great name, huh?) Great question!!!

Marie Force said...

Crystal,
I am SO sorry to have kept you up so late--NOT! LOL! Thanks so much for reading and I'm thrilled to hear you love Sam and Nick so much!

As for Harry's last name, we've used Johnson already (the crack house family in Fatal Affair) and I have overdone it with the M last names in this series: Miller (triplets), McBride, Malone, McNamara. So try again! LOL

Poor Harry! We just can't come up with a good last name for him, and I will need it in Fatal Destiny!

Ronlyn said...

trying again. Hello? HELLLLOOOO???
RAUUUUULLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!

Crystal (cmac) said...

LOL Marie I knew Johnson wouldn't work it was my dirty mind taking over. :) It does that from time to time. Okay so are you looking for a unique last name for him or something more original?

Ronlyn said...

Dr. Harry Salvato

Marie Force said...

LOL on the Johnson, Crystal! I didn't know this about you and your dirty mind, but you fit right in around here! :-)

Ronlyn, I am going to avoid the S names too because Aly reminds me this AM that we gave Nick's lawyer friend Andy the last name of Simone in FC.

I tend to gravitate to Js, Ms and Ss.

Hope said...

I am guessing, and hopefully right...that we find out what he plans to do with the $2 million in the years to come???

Hope said...

Dr. Harry Frost (hee hee)

Ronlyn said...

do we know Harry's ethnicity? Remind me of his coloring again....

Marie Force said...

The $2 million will be a "presence" in their lives going forward. He turned the bulk of it over to Graham to invest, so I expect it to grow. I've also toyed with the notion of whatever Graham invested in coming back around to bite Nick politically. That's just an idea that runs through my twisted mind every now and then...

Another great question from Hope!

Marie Force said...

Harry has dark hair and eyes and dimples. Dimples. Kind of an all-American boy with dark hair. Sam thinks he's very cute.

Hope said...

Terry had a part in Fatal Justice, a small part, but I still loved hearing about him and that Nick hadn't forgotten about him. Will we see more of him in the upcoming book? I am pulling for his sobriety and hoping he gets a love interest.

Ronlyn said...

Dr. Harry Dumont
Dr. Harry Gottlieb
Dr. Harry Enzmann
Dr. Harry Feldman
Dr. Harry Gerard
Dr. Harry Pierson

ummm...

Hope said...

Dr. Harry Sullivan (HEY, don't shake your head at me, that is an all American name)

Marie Force said...

Another great question, Hope! Terry shows up again in Fatal Consequences and I do have a love interest in mind for him, which is hinted at in Fatal Destiny. It should make for an "interesting" pairing. :-)

I just told Aly this morning that I'm starting to feel a bit overwhelmed by all the secondary stories that keep introducing themselves (without any help from me--LOL) and giving them all air time in upcoming books. I've got some pretty heavy stuff coming for Freddie, Gonzo and Jeannie. Somehow I will find a place to squeeze in Terry and XXX. I know, that's mean, right?

Marie Force said...

OMG, I am laughing, Sullivan is my maiden name and you know, it might just be perfect for Harry!

Ronlyn, I went to HS with a Harry Pierson. Do you think he'd mind if I ripped off his name?

Marie Force said...

We gotta get some newbies here. I can't give away books to you guys--you've already read them! LOL

Ronlyn said...

LOL. As long as you made him look good, I'm sure he'd be fine with it. ;-)

Marie Force said...

Running out to go to Wally Mart to get a new portable phone. I am dying without my caller ID! Will be back shortly! Hold down the fort wenches!

Hope said...

Ronlyn, since Marie didn't give us a recipe this time...got anything you want to share? Any new drink for Nick?

Ronlyn said...

ooo, I haven't made up a drink for Nick, but let me think up a recipe.

Ronlyn said...

Ok, I made a new recipe last night and it was SO easy and good.

Sicilian Halibut (but it would be aweomse with chicken as well)

-in an 8x8 dish lay out the meat
-heat over to 450

while oven is heating saute one small onion, sliced and one clove of garlic (minced) until soft (~4 minutes). Add 2 cans diced tomatoes, 1 TBSP capers (drained and rinsed), 5 pitted greek olives (or a can of regular if you think greek olives are nasty like my hubby does) sliced, 1 TBSP basil, 1 TBSP oregano and 1 TBSP lemon juice. Bring to a boil.
Then pour over the meat and pop in the oven for ~10-15 minutes until meat is done.

SO easy and really really good.

Hope said...

Mmmm, Ronlyn, that sounds yummy, minus the olives...YUCK!!!

Question about the Fatal series, what do you think about a possible presidential run for Nick??

Jolene Allcock and Family said...

I can't wait to get ahold of these books, they sound amazing! Ok, so a name for Dr. Harry...Look above to my last name, it's a wonderful strong english name, anyone would be proud to carry that amazing last name, so would Dr. Harry, Dr. Harry _____ >Insert evil laugh here< Ok, couldn't help it, but that would not work with his first name. I married into the name and luckily didn't grow up with it, feel sorry for my kids :)
Now lets get real
Dr. Harry Cruz
Dr. Harry Matonovich
Dr. Harry Stolz
Dr. Harry Andersen
Not very creative, but I tried :)

Ronlyn said...

LMAO @ Allcock. *giggle* LOVE IT!

How about the love/hate relationship with the media that Sam & Nick have? I enjoy (although that's probably not the right word) seeing the struggle and the carry over from Sam's previous encounters with the media.

Ronlyn said...

Hope, it's amazingly good. (and skip the olives. LOL. They don't add much flavor IMO)
This was one recipe where I finished and I went back and reread the recipe because I was sure I'd screwed it up and forgotten something because it was so easy. Even the kids loved it.

Dru said...

Will we see more of Sam's family, in particular her sisters?

Harry Burns
Harry Rogers
Harry Bloom
Harry Wolfe
Harry Rizen
Harry Adams
Harry Bourne

Hope said...

Ha Ha Ha.....love the Allcock....made me giggle

Marie Force said...

Great recipe, Ronlyn! I didn't add one since our post was already running long! However, my kids would NEVER eat halibut! LOL!

Jolene--Haha on the Allcock. You can't go wrong with that! Funny about Wolfe. I flirted shamelessly with a Dr. Wolfe last year, so much so that my doctor said to me later, you really made a hit with the anthesisiologist (no, I can't spell that right and I won't even try--you get it!)

Ronlyn said...

Make it with chicken then for your picky kidlets Marie! LOL
Your children would starve at my house.

Mary G said...

Sounds yummy Ronlyn.
I'm assumong 15 minutes for fish but longer for chicken? Have you tried it on both?

Marie Force said...

Hope,
I would not rule out a run for the White House for Nick. In fact, his "meteoric" rise in politics will be similar to that of Obama's. :-) However, if that were to happen, it would probably have to be at the very end of the series since I would imagine Sam would have to either give up her job or take a leave of absence during the campaign. Not seeing that as something she'd do lightly...

Ronlyn's Media Love-Hate question...
I do expect the media to continue to be an issue for Sam in particular. She goes along with a lot of it (with her teeth grit) for his sake, but it's not "natural" for her to be open with the media.

Dru, I do plan to showcase more of Sam's family. Her sisters, nieces and nephews will be featured in the wedding story.

Ronlyn said...

Mary G~ correct. 10-15 min. for fish (depending on how thick they are) and slightly longer for chicken. I would probably sear the chicken for a few minutes and then put it in the oven so it'll retain it's juices and not dry out.
I haven't tried it with chicken yet, but I'm going to. :-)

What is everyone's thoughts re: Nick's continued relationship with John's family? And "adoption" into Sam's family?

And, Marie, seems like a fine line needs to be drawn (or at least realized) between real life politics (or political issues) and the world of Sam & Nick. How aware are you of that seperation?

Kara C said...

MARIE,
In honor of book club, the schools here closed at 11:30 today. Of course, they had to give the more acceptable reason as 'inclement weather', but *I* know the truth.
Made me smile that the scenes Aly quoted in the blog were also some I highlighted. Of course, then again, I really did highlight SO much!
Surely, there are only two possibilities for Harry's last name:
Dr. Harry Conrad OR Dr. Harry Pepper.

(Ronlyn, Harry has DIMPLES. Gotta live that.)

Hope said...

I kind of like the "adoption" by John's family. Nick was a huge part of their lives, it would be weird for them to drop him when John dies. I am in love with Skip, I love that he warms up to Nick, but still there seems to be the "don't mess with my baby" kind of tension in the background. I like that Sam's family have fallen for Nick too.

What about Stahl? I am assuming he isn't done with Sam??

Ronlyn said...

I KNOW!! DIMPLES!!
I've decided Dr. Harry is my male alter ego: dark hair & eyes, dimples...it's ME! Only the boy version. LOL

Marie Force said...

Ohhhh I like Harry Conrad.

And yay for the schools shutting down early for book club! That was SO good of them!

Hope said...

I love the Dr. Harry Pepper....LOVE IT!!!!

Ronlyn said...

I like Harry Conrad...until I started thinking about how it reminds me of Harry Connick Jr. hehe...He's got dimples too.

Hope said...

Mmmm, Harry Connick Jr, is....ALL MINE btw, just sayin'

Ronlyn said...

he sings purrrty.

Marie Force said...

I thought of Harry Potter too and having him have to live with that name, but then I realized that would've come up in Fatal Justice when Sam first meets him. She would've asked him if that's really his name.... I actually know a guy named Harry Potter. LOL

Me likey Harry Connick....

Marie Force said...

I am interested in what you all think of Nick's ongoing relationship with the O'Connors. I do expect to keep them fully engaged in the series, and they appear in Fatal Consequences.

Speaking of FC, I can't wait for you guys to read that one. SO much happens in that book! Whew! My editor is reading it now. We'll see what she says!

Hope said...

Any sneak peeks in FC??

Ronlyn said...

I'm thinking as Terry recovers and becomes more involved in the office things will "settle" in with the O'Connors. It's got to be tough having the Senate seat that's been in the family for generations suddenly "out" of the family, even though they have a strong relationship with Nick.

Interestingly, I like the O'Connors more now than I did in FA.

Hope said...

I agree with Ronlyn, I liked them better in FJ, but I think for me that is because they were being untruthful, and we all knew it, but couldn't figure out why until later.

Ronlyn said...

was everyone suprised when Sam wasn't ready to move in with Nick?

Hope said...

What about the baby thing? Do you want to see Sam have a baby? Will she go through with the surgery to help with that process? That whole thing made her so relatable to me, cause I too, had severe endometriosis.

Crystal (cmac) said...

Wow busy ladies! I think I like Harry Conrad too! It has a ring to it for sure.

Hey Ronlyn what is your Mr. Dimples last name? Mayne he is the character and doesn't even know it!

Kara How nice of the school to acknowledge Bookclub day!! They knew we couldn't have a real party without you!

Marie I love that the O'Connor's are still a huge part of Nick's life. I think Nick giving Terry a job goes a step further in showing the kind of man that he is. I think of the O'Connor's as Nick's foundation since his own childhood wasn't all that great!

Kara C said...

I love the O'Connor's relationships with Nick. It is complex and definitely in a time of change. It has to be painful and at the same time reassuring for the parents, at some level, to see Nick and have that constant reminder of their son.

Marie Force said...

Hmmmmmmm, well it's not edited yet, so I'm not sure if there will be major changes.... Here's a coupla tidbits...

Sam and Nick try to plan a wedding while contending with their crazy jobs. The scene in which Nick pins Sam down on a wedding date is one of my favorite scenes EVER between the two of them. :-)

Nick's mother comes back on the scene in one of the most emotionally wrenching scenes I've written in a long time.

While on the campaign trail, Nick meets a child who steals his heart....

Sam grapples with one of her officers being in very grave danger for the first time since taking command....

Gonzo is hit with something he never saw coming...

Freddie has to decide whether he is satisfied with an intense sexual relationship with Elin while contending with his mother's disapproval...

The mystery will focus on two dead immigrant women whose deaths end up rocking the highest echelons of the federal government.

There. Sound good?

Hope said...

OMG....I CAN'T wait till July....really, JULY???

Ronlyn said...

Crystal. Salvato. LOL. Why do you think I suggested it?
But since Marie said no, I'll use it elsewhere....

Marie Force said...

I definitely worked to redeem the O'Connors in FJ. Hopefully readers understand why they lied to Sam in FA. They were protecting a 20-year-old secret and lying about that issue had become second nature to them by then.

Redeeming them and continuing their involvement in Nick's life was one reason why he asks Terry to come to work for him. They will continue to play a very big part in his life. Graham is Nick's go-to guy for advice and counsel and Laine is Nick's touchstone. She keeps him grounded and centered. In FC, there's a scene where she can tell just by looking at Nick that something is off with him and calls him out on it. I love that they care for him at that level. There's a moment I love so much between Graham and Nick at the end of FC that made me weepy writing it. So yes, they will continue to play a big role in his life and Sam's.

Hope, July will be here before you know it! I promise!

I'm not getting the joke on Salvato so you gotta cue me in...

Harry Conrad is starting to stick.... What does everyone else think?

Hope said...

My gutterville part likes Jolene's suggestion, bwahahah - but I like Harry Conner too....BUT, aren't John's parents the O'Connors?? To much connors???? Just askin'

Alison said...

WOW...July is a looooong time from now :(

Harry Conrad...I like it! I'd let him doctor me up!

Hope said...

OH, and one of my FAVORITE scenes from Fatal Justice was that play on words for the Filibuster - made me spit out Pepsi.

Marie Force said...

Is Conrad too close to O'Connor too???? Whaaaaa!

Glad you liked the filibuster thing, Hope. I fought for that.... My editor thought it was too silly. YES, it was too silly. Of course. But it was funny that Sam said it! LOL

Kara C said...

I LIKE Harry Conrad! I LOVE Harry Conrad. (Conner - too close, Conrad - naaaa.)
Filibuster. SO. Funny!

Hope said...

No of course Conrad isn't to close, I was having another blonde moment (I really need to get that checked out) and thought the suggestion was for Conner, and didn't double check before I posted.

Alison said...

Filibuster was perfect...cracked me up! Being silly with your mate is fun!

Marie Force said...

LOL Kara! You aren't BIASED or anything are you? Love Harry Conrad. Will keep that on the short list for sure!

Alison, I'm glad you liked the filibuster joke. It was kinda 8th grade of Sam, but Nick thought it was funny! (Because I said so, damn it!)

Aly said...

The naysayer says no to Harry Conrad. That just doesn't work for MY Harry!

Kara C said...

Thought it was YOUR Nick, Aly. You can't have them all. LOL!

Marie Force said...

Hackett, you are killing me! Just when I think we've got a winner...

I realized I forgot to answer Hope's question about The Baby. This is a difficult and complicated question. What I am willing to say right now is that Sam and Nick WILL have a family. Whether or not they ever have a baby of their own remains to be seen. Sam's fertility issues and her history of miscarriage will continue to play a major role in the series. I can't answer the baby question definitively right now because, to be honest, I don't know yet....

Is that unsatisfying or what? LOL

flchen1 said...

Woohooo, Marie! I have to say that I'm not always a fan of the continuing series where it features the same H/h, but in your case, I completely make an exception!! I know that it'll come together like a dream in your capable hands!

Marie Force said...

Thanks so much Fedora! I appreciate your vote of confidence!

Aly said...

KK - Marie - hag that she is - insists that Nick is for Sam. Therefore, I am taking Harry since he isn't married. I see an Aly in Harry's future!! :)

Marie - As I said before, of course the final decision is yours - nice like that aren't I? But I am just not feeling any of these last names. And considering it is going to be my last name one day, I think we should choose very carefully!!

Marie Force said...

LMAO, Aly! What about Sullivan???

Ronlyn said...

~snort~ ALY! I don't see you offering up any names.....

Julia said...

Dr. Bree
Dr. Berry (teehehee)

Oh what do I know! I suck at making up names LOL! I really want to read these two books, since I read your other contemporary romance books and love them! :)

Hope said...

Where you been all day Hackett?

Dr. Harry Jeffries (that is all American right?)

Aly Jeffries??? hmmm maybe???

Ronlyn said...

Ronlyn said...

LOL...I meant Reardon...Rearsdon is a typo.

Hope said...

I don't like Reardon...

What about....Hedrick??

Marie Force said...

Thought it might be!

Hey, Julia, thanks for coming by and offering some suggestions for Harry!

Aly said...

I sent a spreadsheet to Marie with over 300 last name possibilities :)

Hope said...

I should have known there was a spreadsheet involved somewhere.

Aly said...

What about Harry Ellis?

Aly said...

Leave me and my spreadsheets alone or I won't share my Upcoming Books List with you...

Ronlyn said...

I know! I KNOW!!!

Alyson RAUUUUUUULLLLLLLLLLLL!!!

Hope said...

Sorry Aly *handing my head* but still funny

Kara C said...

I'm still liking Harry Conrad. HOWEVER, in the interest of my friendship with Aly, I'll give some other suggestions. So, ok. How about Dr. Harry Oops? That way, when he marries Aly, she'll be...

Aly said...

KARA CONRAD!!! You are not funny!

Ronlyn - Alyson RAAUUULLLL does have a nice ring to it!

Marie Force said...

Snorting on Aly Oops! LOVE IT, KK!

Hope said...

KK is on a roll today...that literally made me LOL

Kara C said...

Ok, ok, Aly. Sorry. Let's try a couple more.

How about Dr. Harry Way? Dr. Harry Katz? (Go ahead, Aly, try these on for size.)

Hope said...

I don't really have anything else to offer, but I REALLY wanted to be post #100, so here I am :)

Aly said...

Oh KK -- I am done with you today.

Marie Force said...

You guys are cracking me up.

As the supreme ruler of all things Fatal--Harry Reardon is the No. 1 choice at the moment.

Top that and we'll talk....

Hope said...

Harry Anything-but-Reardon??? Has a nice ring to it, yes??

Dr. Harry Harris?
Dr. Harry Thomas?
Dr. Harry Williams?

Marie Force said...

Don't love the double Hs

I used Thomas as a first name in FA

Williams is kinda generic for our boy Harry....

See how hard this is???

Hope said...

Dr. Harry Thompson
Dr. Harry Walker
Dr. Harry Allen

Aly said...

Addison
Lange
Ingalls
Reddin
Lehman
Grant
Paulson
Kane
Allen
Ostrander
Jarvis
Thayer

Hope said...

Ok, back to Fatal Justice...I am guessing Stahl isn't done messing with Sam. Is that the case? If so, does she finally help him dig his grave in the next book?

Hope said...

HA, Aly and I both said Allen, I like it, just sayin'

Ronlyn said...

why you hating on Reardon Hope?? It's a good name. LOL
Not that anyone calls him by his last name, he's Dr. Harry to everyone.

Marie Force said...

Stahl is not done with Sam and she is not done with him. They will continue to cause trouble for each other over the course of the series. Stahl will never miss a chance to hammer at Sam and vice versa!

Hope said...

I don't know, I just really don't like it. To me it almost sounds....pompous

just an FYI, the letters that I am supposed to enter for word verification are...uperv

Ronlyn said...

LMAO @ uperv.
IMO, the last name needs to have 2 (or more) syllables.

Ronlyn said...

marie, how aware are you of real life politics vs. fictional politics and drawing a good balance?

Marie Force said...

Thank you for re-asking that question Ronlyn (and please do ask any that I forgot today--it was crazy with work and book club and kids, etc!)

I am VERY aware of how important it is to keep the politics somewhat mild in this series. I ventured into a minefield in FJ with the abortion storyline and the dealings with homosexuality and its impact on families and politics. My editor said I was brave to take on those two hot-button issues in this book and we worked at keeping the story minimally offensive. :-)

I will confess to making Nick a Democrat on purpose. What can I say? I'm from one of the bluest states in the union! :-) Nick is from one of the others... But I do plan to have a light hand with the politics in these books. A lot of Nick's work is boring and slow and tedious. I'd prefer to focus on his interactions with constituents, for example, than to show him in tedious committee meetings.

Did I answer your question, Ronlyn? Please feel free to fire back with others!

wantbaby said...

Well...I just loved FJ, SO much. This book really kept the momentum going for the series, and delved so much deeper into each of the characters. The balance of romance, suspense, and comedy was brilliant, and just made it such a fun book to read. I hope this series goes on for a long, long, time...I LOVE books with continuing characters, because I always get so attached to them, and when the book ends, I miss them. So I'm glad that there are plans to keep this series going...it's always fun to visit old friends.

Heather

Marie Force said...

Thank you so much, Heather! I so appreciate the kind words and dedication to the series. I am so glad that we met through Sam and Nick! :-)

Make sure you check out the teaser for Fatal Consequences that I included among today's posts.

Glad you were able to come by. Feel free to fire away if you have any questions about the series or where we're going with it!

Ronlyn said...

what are you finding to be the biggest challenge in having a series with one cast of characters (not to say that new players aren't entering the field, they are)

Marie Force said...

Ronlyn,
Another great question! The biggest challenge I'm finding is managing the the sprawling cast and their various stories. I want to give all the secondary characters their due, but I'm realizing that not every character can be "featured" in every book. They can all "appear" but not necessarily be front and center. So that's a definite challenge.

I truly thought the most challenging thing would be keeping Sam and Nick's relationship fresh and fun and passionate, but I'm finding that's the easiest part. They just lend themselves to all of the above. The scenes with just the two of them are my favorites to write (and read).

Hope said...

We are heading out...so I must leave the wenches behind for a few days....its been fun today. Congrats Marie on a successful book club day, and an AWESOME series.

Marie Force said...

Have a great weekend, Hope! Thanks for the great questions and I'm so glad you're enjoying the series!

TOTALLY COOL ALERT!!!!!!!!!!

I just saw Angela James on a very popular talk show on a very popular TV station in Toronto. She was talking ereaders. Showed the Kindle, the Sony & then she showed the Kobo from Chapters. Guess what book cover flashed on my big screen TV. WOOHOO!!!

Yes you Marie Force with your FA cover. Everyone in the audience got a Kobo with a book downloaded. I didn't hear what book because the audience was screaming too loudly.LOL. Not sure if they said
"this" book or not.

Marie Force said...

I heard about this!!!!!! So exciting to be "all over Canada!" Very cool Mary! So glad you got to see it! Got to watch the clip online.

Smart Bitches did a blurb & there is a link to the episode. You can kind of see a pic of your book here.

Mary G said...

I was so totally thrilled when your cover flashed on the screen. She set it down with the cover showing too I think. I had no one to jump up & down with. Hubby did not get my thrill LOL.

Marie Force said...

I had heard about it but I just watched it. I didn't realize it was SO front and center! It sounded like Marilyn said the "Force" book was loaded on the Kobos, too! Love it!

Mary G said...

Well picture that on a big screen.
I thought they said your book too.
Sooo cool!!

We might have a winner for Harry's last name:

ROTH.

Aly gets the credit. I asked her to make him Jewish and she stepped up to the plate....

Next order of business: Today is the 50th anniversary of JFK's inauguration, so it was fitting that book club went to Washington today.

I will "consult with the author" and let you know about a winner....

Okay, I consulted with her and since Julia is the only one who came to book club today who HASN'T read the books, I will give Fatal Affair to her and I will give Fatal Justice to Fedora!

Email me at marie@marieforce.com to claim your prizes ladies.

Thanks to everyone for coming out to play today, for the help naming Dr. Harry and for all the wonderful questions about the series. I so appreciate all the support and excitement!

xoxoxoxo

Mary G said...

Congrats Julia & Fedora!! You will enjoy.

Kara C said...

Congrats to the winners! BTW, Aly told me she totally digs Harry Conrad.
