Love at First Flight Book Club Meeting

Whoo hoo! It's party time! I'm so excited to be here tonight to talk to my lovely readers about Love at First Flight. This book breaks a few of the more firmly entrenched romance rules, so I've been looking forward to this opportunity to hear what you have to say! I've been blessed with wonderful reviews and lots of emails from satisfied readers. However, I know there were a few twists and turns that had you muttering to yourself! Tell me about those mutter moments and maybe win one of the prizes I have sitting here with me on my sofa!

Picture a well-stocked bar and some hot, shirtless guys serving up a wide variety of tasty treats. (FOOD, people! Get your minds out of the gutter!)

One last warning for those who haven't read the book... This meeting will be fat with spoilers, so don't click on the comments if you haven't read the book yet. You can always come back later and weigh in.

With no further ado: ready, set, CLICK on the comments and let's get going!

Welcome friends!
To get things started, let's talk about the elephant in the middle of the room. What did you REALLY think when Juliana went back to Jeremy? Go ahead, you can say it... I'm ready.....

Judy F said...

hey Marie,

To be honest I had a no no no no moment about her going back to Jeremy. But I got past it and understood why she had to come to the decision all on her own.

Does that make sense? ( I am so tired)

Almost have my review done. Didn't get to it at all last week had a terrible sinus headache.

J. Kaye said...

I'm here!

Now about Juliana...I had a friend like her. She was such a believable character. I wanted to choke the life out of her several times in the book. And that's one of the reasons the book was so good. If someone can't see doing what she did, they know someone.

Hello Marie! I'm a book blogger but didn't get a chance yet to read the book! I just read about your "Party" over on J.Kaye's Book Blog and thought I'd stop over to wish you the best and (even with the spoilers) I'm more than ready to learn a little more about "Love at First Fight"!

I wish I could participate more! But, again, I am looking forward to reading the book!

xoxo Love, Luck and Continued Success,
Amy (park-avenue princess)

Marie Force said...

Hi Judy!
LOL on the no no no moment! I was sure readers would be up in arms about that and I was right. But I saw her as a "closure girl." She'd need to be able to go forward with Michael free and clear without looking backward and wondering about Jeremy. Does that make sense?

Hope you're feeling better soon! Sinus is miserable. I am plagued by sinus trouble so I feel your pain. Have another drink, let me get one of the hot guys over here... Hang on....

Marie Force said...

LOL and OUCH on the choking J. Kaye! I guess if my job is to make you feel "something," then anger is part of the mix, right?

What do you think about her needing closure?

Marie Force said...

Thanks Amy! We will be spoiling but if you don't care, we'd love to have you. I'll look forward to hearing what you think of the book when you get time to read it! I appreciate your comment!

cgracia24 said...

That she was making a big mistake.
Although, I understand her feelings. She truly loved Michael, and it was great, it was new, and it was different than what she had with Jeremy.
She had been with Jeremy for so long, and here he was, making this huge effort for their future, something she had always wanted with him.
Even for me, as a reader, it was hard to just push Jeremy aside for Michael.

Park Avenue Princess said...

Thank you and NO, I don't mind at all...I'm one of "those" readers that sometimes need to flip to the very end...before I'm done! But I'll keep quiet from now on!

xoxo Amy

Judy F said...

That is it exactly Marie. Though I didn't want her going back to Jeremy I understood why she needed to do it. She would have always wondered what if?

Can those hotties give massages??? LOL

Marie Force said...

Great point, cgarcia! By the time I was finished writing it, I felt sorry for Jeremy. He had the ah ha moment just a tad bit too late.

Speaking of Jeremy, I spoke to my editor this weekend at RWA about a possible book with him as the hero. What would you guys think of that?

Amy, feel free to hang out and weigh in!

Marie Force said...

I need a HOTTIE to massage Judy F please! I need a hottie on Judy... oh, er, um, that came out wrong! LOL

Marie Force said...

Okay, so while you're thinking about the Jeremy as a hero question, here's my next one:

Love at First Flight was sort of unconventional in the sense that you see Michael and Juliana WITH other people before they get together. How did you feel about seeing them be intimate with other people before they were with each other?

J. Kaye said...

It was all on target. I mean this was a guy she thought she be with for the rest of her life - her first love. It's impossible to poof walk away from that. Yes, she needed closure. I like the part after Jeremy the best. The break was so real and so good for Juliana.

Judy F said...

LOL Marie either works for me with the hottie.

Didn't you have Jeremy getting married? Would this be his story then with Sherrie? (is that the right name)

Marie Force said...

Oh, J. Kaye, I'm thrilled you liked the break so much. That was one of my favorite parts of that book. I tried to make it move quickly so you didn't feel like the story stalled out there, but I thought it was SO NECESSARY that she take some time on her own after all she had been through. Great comment!

Crystal G said...

A book for Jeremy??
I actually wondered about that, and that was one of my questions I wanted to ask.

J. Kaye said...

Marie, I fell in love with Michael from the very beginning. Seriously. So I wanted them together no matter what.

As far as Jeremy as a hero, I could see it. He was never a seriously bad guy to me. I know a lot of men like him...he just has an issue with commitment.

Marie Force said...

Hey Crystal,
Welcome to the party (love that Red Sox logo!!) GO SOX!

You guys are right! Jeremy does end up married to Sherrie, but the idea is this:

It's bad enough that Jeremy is marrying on the rebound, but falling in love with his new wife's best friend at the wedding really takes the cake....

Something like that. Obviously, the marriage would not work out--LOL. I picture Jeremy's mother telling him to get his head out of his ass and get his life together!

Marie Force said...

Yes, J. Kaye, it was a commitment thing with Jeremy so it would be fun--once he makes the commitment--to have it be a disaster and then have to clean up yet another mess for him!

I have a gift certificate to Amazon to give away and I have to give it to you, J. Kaye, to thank you SO MUCH for all your lovely support of my books. I was THRILLED to see your quote about Line of Scrimmage on the cover of L@FF. I will email you after the meeting with your prize!

Crystal G said...

Yes, she definitely needed that break. But a whole year? I was like Michael, when he asked "You needed the whole year?" or something along those lines.
I couldn't have lasted a year away from Michael! LOL

The intimacies with others.....
Sometimes it bothers me.
But since this was in the beginning of the book, and they didn't really know each other, I was able to over look it. :)
And it was much sweeter with Michael & Juliana, then with the "others"

Pat L. said...

Havent finished the book but this ok as sometimes I sneak a peek a the end.

I can never rem by google log in.

Pat L.

Judy F said...

oh that sounds interesting...

Marie Force said...

Crystal,
The first love scene between M&J was rewritten about 20 times! I don't normally redo something that much but I needed it to be just right. I love the way it came out, but I slaved over that one!

Karin said...

Why can't it work out? If Jeremy really tries... That is the next story!

Cheryl Brooks said...

Hi Marie,
I wasn't too upset with Juliana for going back to Jeremy, at least for a little while. It was one of those instances where you just don't dump your best friend of ten years without first giving them the benefit of the doubt. After that, I figured he had his chance and blew it.

Sorry I forgot to announce this event on my blog as promised. I can only plead post-conference mental meltdown!

Marie Force said...

Hi Pat,
Thanks for joining us. I hope we don't ruin the end for you! Hopefully the ladies will tell you the ending is worth sticking around for. That last chapter, OMG, my favorite ending of all my books!

Crystal G said...

Ok wait!! Jeremy and Sherrie don't work out?
He falls in love with her best friend?!

Intrigued I am LOL

btw, my first post was under cgracia24. I've never blogged or anything, so I had to change the screen name, and of course, pimp out my Red Sox!!

I had a HUGE smile when reading the part about Michael throwing on his Sox shirt ;)

Pat L. said...

May I ask if you will be doing more sports heroes - I loved Line of Scrimmage.

Marie Force said...

Hi Karin,
Nice to see you here! I guess it could work out, but I want Jeremy to make another big mistake on top of the other one so he can really hit rock bottom. Then I'll build him back up. It's just in its earliest infancy at the moment, so all ideas are certainly welcome!

Marie Force said...

Pat,
I don't have another sports hero in mind right now, but I LOVE baseball, so I hope to do a baseball player somewhere down the road. I'm so glad you loved LOS! I signed a bunch of copies at RWA this weekend!

Pat L. said...

Nah, dont worry about it. Look forward to the last chapter as well.

Karin said...

If he continues to act in character it won't take long for him to crash - mainly becasue he doesn't have a ten year relationship to bolster him up

Crystal G said...

YES! Give us a baseball player! He can be the team captain/catcher for a Boston team!! :)

Marie Force said...

Hi Cheryl!
I feel your pain sister--I was so TIRED today and had to work!! ACK! Hope your eyes are feeling better!

Crystal,
Michael was a Sox fan because I am--LOL!

You guys! I am having so much fun! I can't keep up with you guys. MY hubby is cracking up at my frantic typing!

Judy F said...

You must do another football or baseball book. I LOVED LOS. Pimped that baby every where. Wish I still have my pt bookstore job so I could pimp this book too

Pat L. said...

I love baseball; my Dodgers are in first - the best record in the major just about 10 plus percentage point ahead of the RedSox for the major league high.

And I love it, just love series or continuing books. So yay for Jeremy getting his own book.

How long does this chat last?

Marie Force said...

Ohhhh, Varitek and those THIGHS... Ahem, sorry, Red Sox moment with Crystal! Imagine the sex scenes.... Hot guys, can I get an ice water over here? STAT!

Next question for you ladies... Want to hear about some of the things that got changed from my version to the printed version? One of em will shock you! LOL

Ready....

Marie Force said...

I was thinking an hour on the chat, but I'll stay until you guys are DONE. LOL

Thanks for pimping me Judy!! And Pat, glad the Dodgers have Manny now. Good riddance! LOL

Crystal G said...

His thighs are like tree trunks!! Believe me, I've imagined the sex scenes!! LOL

J. Kaye said...

"...but I want Jeremy to make another big mistake on top of the other one so he can really hit rock bottom."

YES!

Marie Force said...

Okay, I have J. Kaye's approval on the potential new book! That's a green light! LOL

Second Amazon gift certificate has to go to Judy for all the pimping she did of LOS! Will email you after to get that to you!!

Judy F said...

my poor Cincinnat reds need help. Seems most of the team is on the DL...

Marie Force said...

Karin,
You made a good point about Jeremy not having the ten-year relationship to prop him up in the new marriage. I love the idea of him maybe fainting at the altar or something... The new marriage is a disaster from the get-go! Thinking a lot about it since my editor and I talked about it. We'll see!

Okay, so for the stuff that got changed... Rachelle, the teenaged witness? She died in my first version! Go ahead and say it, you would've killed me right?

Pat L. said...

Manny was awesome for the Dodgers last year - not doing so well, I guess since he lost his juice....

Just waiting for him to make some trouble or act like a bad boy.

Anyway, yes shock us away.

J. Kaye said...

Marie, I am reading through all the responses and see the gift certificate to Amazon.

***SCREAM***

My hands are shaking I am so excited! Thank you oodles and gobs!

Crystal G said...

OMG!!!! SOOOOOO glad you changed that! I really liked her. I wished that she could have met up with M&J later on...

Crystal G said...

Well now that you said he faints at the altar, you just have to write that in there! LOL

Judy F said...

THanks Marie on the amazon.

but did you hear my GASP about Rachelle???????

Marie Force said...

Glad you are so happy J. Kaye! Remember to send me your mailing address so I can get you some bookmarks with your quote on them!!

Crystal,
You know, I was thinking as a mom with that decision to keep her from seeing them. I wouldn't want my child reminded of that tough time. I figured maybe later they'd re-connect, and hoped readers would draw their own conclusions there.

One of the other things my editor made me change (she was brilliant with these changes...) In my original version, Juliana didn't tell Michael she didn't marry Jeremy. That scene where she now calls him is one of my favorites in that book!

Karin said...

Also, once you kill a character off it's a little have to bring them back again - unless you are on a soap opera or Dallas :>)
It's easier for them to get a job (or school) out of state for a while!

Marie Force said...

LOL Crystal, you want that THUD at the altar huh? Just the idea of it makes me giggle. Oh the drama, the smelling salts, the twittering bride... HA

Pat L. said...

Yes, that was a shocker! Glad you changed your mind.

I was so looking forward to your second book because I loved the first one so much, you got me hooked. I always pass along books or spread the word on books I love to my mom, friends and blogsites. And sure I will be touting this one as well as LOS.

Marie Force said...

Karin,
She wasn't killed off--just poisoned but she recovered. No soap opera tactics, don't worry!!

One of my other favorite scenes in that book (and one I would've loved to use as an excerpt during the blog tour if it wasn't such a spoiler) was the one where Juliana tells Michael that she's going back to Jeremy. I still cry every time I read it. Ugh! Poor Michael, huh?

Karin said...

hard - sorry I have to keep refreshing my screen to see the new comments!

Crystal G said...

You do have a brilliant editor! That was one of my favorite scenes as well. Poor Michael! It would have been complete hell for him not knowing for that long whether she went through with it or not.

I completely understood Rachelle's mom's decision. I'm a mom as well, and I think I would of wanted the same.

Marie Force said...

Me too, Karin! Next time, I'll look into a chat room. But this is so fun!

Marie Force said...

Yes, Crystal, my editor said it would've been mean to not tell Michael for a whole year and then just show up out of the blue.

Judy F said...

I liked her calling Michael too. Not letting him know would have been cruel.

J. Kaye said...

Marie, send you the info now! :)

Marie Force said...

You know what else I've been thinking about? Paige's book! Wouldn't that be fun? Redeeming the pampered princess!

Judy F said...

oh I like the idea of Paige's book. Breaking away from Daddy's control.

Pat L. said...

Yes, as I said before I love continuing books; am sure most readers do. So, go Paige and Marie. Wow, now we have maybe 2 more books to look forward to; see what you and your editor started. LOL.

Crystal G said...

Have you ever read a really good book, and when you're done, you can't start another book, because you're afraid you're setting yourself up for disappointment?
Well it happens to me every now and then, and it seriously happened with L@FF. I couldn't start another book for over a week. I had to go to my "keepers" and do skim throughs.

And I loved LOS as well.

Marie Force said...

Okay, drum roll please.... I've got the DH here with me and he's going to choose the winner of the L@FF grand prize gift basket (which will really be a box...) from all the people who responded to the L@FF questions on my website....

And the winner is....

PAT L.

YEAH!!!!! Email your address to me (marie@marieforce.com) and I'll send it off to you in the next two weeks

J. Kaye said...

Congratulations to PAT L!!

Crystal G said...

Paige annoyed the heck out of me. But I'm with Pat L. I love continuing books, and getting to see the characters again :)

I'd actually like to Paige break away from her father, and finally become her own person.

BTW, am I the only one who was surprised that she actually was pregnant?? LOL

Marie Force said...

I'm so glad you guys like these ideas for new books! We'll see what happens, but I'll definitely let you know! Readers do love continuing books. I'm working on a series right now that I'm really excited about. Four brothers, their matchmaking mother, and an island setting... It's been a blast so far.

Crystal, what a lovely compliment! Thank you so much! I'm delighted you liked the book so much!

Karin said...

Congratulations to the winners and the great author. Night all! This was more fun and more informative than a chat room with 100 people all talking at once :>)

Judy F said...

congrats Pat L

Marie Force said...

Crystal,
I TOO was surprised she was actually pregnant! LOL! I don't plot my books so they just kind of unfold as they unfold. I had no idea she was really going to be pregnant but I went back and forth a hundred different ways and thought, well, readers might be surprised if she's actually pregnant. Glad you were! I agree that she'd have to break free of her parents and learn to stand on her own two feet. I think her journey could be very compelling. Something else to think about--so many books so little time!

J. Kaye said...

I agree with Crystal G. Loved LOS! Both books were so different and so good. I can't wait to see what's next.

Marie Force said...

Thanks for coming, Karin!

I'm getting ready to wrap it up and take the DH out to dinner. Our kids are at a dance as part of their summer camp so we get to squeeze in a mini-date. I'll get the prizes out as soon as I get home later!

Judy F said...

This has been fun. Getting sleepy though its a work day tomorrow and I get up at 5:10 am.

Thanks again Marie.

Write faster. LOL

Crystal G said...

Well it was very fun!! :)

The Red Sox are about to play, so I gotta watch it :)

J. Kaye said...

Thank you, Marie, for having this gathering. I really enjoyed learning some of the behind the scenes stuff that went on.

Pat L. said...

Wow, I stepped away to check the ball scores.

Holy smokes, I am thrilled to see I have won the grand prize.

Thank you all so much and thank dh.

Thanks ladies for your congrats. This was so much fun. Look forward to finishing the books and the upcoming ones. Mailing info to follow shortly.

Thanks again, Marie.

Marie Force said...

I'm trying Judy!! Thanks for staying up late to hang out with us! You guys are the BEST!! I was telling Cheryl before that I was scared no one would show up. Who knew I had so many fabo friends? Will keep you posted on the things we talked about here. I'm writing as fast as I can!! LOL!

Pat, email me at marie@marieforce.com to claim your prize. My daughter picked up a few items in the Baltimore airport on Friday after her first solo flight. Make sure you check out the photo of her with Nora Roberts which is also posted to my blog! More photos from RWA coming this week!

I have to say. I was Pissed OFF.
I Threw my book in my trash. momentarily. I thought now she loyal to him. Why didn't she give him the benefit of the doubt when he first told her about interest in seeing other people? Before she fell for Michael and he fell in love with her?

Marie Force said...

I had a blast! I never had an hour go by so fast! Thanks for turning out everyone! We'll do this again after the next book!! YAY!

Keep in touch with me!!
xoxoxo
Marie

Marie Force said...

BTW--for any late comers, keep the comments coming and I will answer every one when I get home!

Donna--ack--the trash? LOL! You're killing me! I made you good and MAD, huh? Well, hopefully, you retrieved your copy and finished to get the ending you wanted!

Kytaira said...

Congrats !!! i'm cool with spoilers

diva donna said...

Marie,
I gave you the benefit of the doubt. I figured Marie will not let me done. Michael was too good of a Guy. And we both were in love with him. So I figured she's pulling at my heartstrings.
This time difference messed me up. I came on at 6 CDT no one was here. So I ate and came back at 7. Massive Turn out. I arrived too late.
See this book was great!!!

Book Dragon said...

I just stopped in to say Hi ~waving Madly~ and to tell you that I'm looking forward to reading the book.

diva donna said...

The intimacies with Jules, Jeremy and Page and Micheal were OK. BUT You knocked it out of the park with Jules and Micheal. That's where the real Heat was. You loved this Michael and you felt his passion. So I felt that passion too. If I hadn't felt his pain. I would never have thrown it in the trash.
But I got My HEA. You're forgiven.

Marie Force said...

Thanks for trying to catch us, Donna!! Of course I won't let you down!! Never!

Marie Force said...

Yay book dragon! Thanks for coming and for waving madly! Let us know what you think of the book!!

Marie Force said...

Phew Donna! Thank you for forgiving me. HOW could I NOT give my beloved Michael his happily ever after?

:-)

Sharon Lathan said...

Wow! Marie, the response to your Book Club is amazing! I haven't read thru it all yet, but I will.

You know how I and Emily feel about L@FF so I won't reiterate.

As for Julianna: I am glad that Emily warned me, but I totally understood her. I definitely wanted to throttle her, but under the circumstances, as you had so marvelously written Julianna, it was the right thing for her to do. Or at least very understandable.

Marie Force said...

Aww, thanks, Sharon! The book club was soooo fun! You should do it when your next book comes out! I waited three weeks to let people have time to read and then we aired it out!!! The gang loved the idea for a Jeremy book!

Hope you're recovering. I'm still SO tired but I didn't have to fly to CA. I just spent 9+ hrs in the car--the traffic was HORRIBLE!

Sharon Lathan said...

As far as "breaking the rules" - I really do believe there should be no "rules" in writing. It is an art that comes from the heart. Creativity does not follow rules. And if everyone wrote the same, kept to the established status quo, then all novels would be the same. Frankly, it raises my hackles and annoys the crud out of me that anyone in the artistic community would adhere to "rules."

OK, off the soap box! But you did ask! :)

Sharon Lathan said...

"It's bad enough that Jeremy is marrying on the rebound, but falling in love with his new wife's best friend at the wedding really takes the cake...."

Fabulous tagline! Where did you ever come up with that? ;)

Marie Force said...

LOL, Sharon! I was so hoping you'd make my day by swearing again! I hear you about the rules--screw em! If I'd followed them, I might not have sold a book yet!

Marie Force said...

Well, I had a little help from some of my friends. You might know one of them!

It sure is great to be with other writers when you need a new hook! LOL

Sharon Lathan said...

I definitely think I will steal this idea for a discussion. I love reading everyone's passion for L@FF. It was an amazing book. I am so happy you are giving serious thought to Jeremy's story. I know it would be wonderful.

Glad you made it home safely. It was such a joy spending time with you. And your Emily. An absolutely doll! Give her another hug from me! And check out my blog where I relate the Nora experience!

Sharon Lathan said...

Feel better now?

Marie Force said...

Thank you, Sharon! That is a very big swear for you and I appreciate you letting it rip for me! I won't tell Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth about your potty mouth, don't worry!

Thanks for the kind words about my Emily. She had a wonderful time and I appreciate you all making her feel so welcome!

Off to check your blog now!! I need some photos for mine since I forgot my camera Friday night!! DOH!

diva donna said...

Marie,
Just to clarify.
I have a little Cloth Trash Bag attached to my reading Chair.
I throw Wrappers, Crumbs, Kleenex, Napkins etc. in it.
When you Blew my mind with Jules going back to Jeremy. I was screaming at Jules. So just as a Symbolic Gesture. I put the book in my trash Bag. And walked into the basement. I changed the laundry around. i took the book out of the trash bag. And Jules came to her senses. So it was GOOD!!!HEA Oh, I loved that Michael.
