Today, I attended a career day at my daughter's school. She's in seventh grade, so I had the delicate task of discussing romance writing with 12- and 13-year-olds. I was really impressed by the quality and depth of their questions. They wanted to know everything from where I get my ideas to how long it takes to print out an MS. I shared these statistics, which came from my RWA newsletter colleague and friend, Kristan Higgins:
- 150 million Americans say these words at some point in their lives: "I want to write a book."
- 15 million start a book.
- 1.5 million finish a book.
- 150,000 work up the nerve, the fortitude and the thick skin needed to submit their work for consideration by industry professionals.
- 15,000 are sold each year.
This helped them to understand why I'm so excited to see "Line of Scrimmage" on its way to publication!
